My focus bends so that all I can see is the negative space between the branches of birch. Stripped and bare, the trees are no longer trees; they cease to be themselves and become merely the reflection of what they are not. Empty space, defined by bones.

WELCOME TO

THE WORLD OF SOPHIA DEGRAVES

Some years ago, I found myself crying whilst driving down a Hobart street. My tears were for a woman I had never known and who has compelled me ever since. Sophia Degraves was the wife of Peter Degraves - he of the Cascade Brewery and Theatre Royal. Who was she? The space in between.

SAMPLE OF THE DAY

Like a stepping stone in a stream, this rock in the middle of the southern ocean seems to be as much described by the incursions of water into her coast line as for the existence of itself; delineated by what it is not as much as what it is. What is an island if not a place where water is not?
